At least five errant drivers with over 300 outstanding traffic tickets were taken into custody on Thursday morning during a collaborative operation along Spanish Town Road.
Several other drivers were ticketed for breaches of the Road Traffic Act.
Superintendent Damion Manderson, Commanding Officer for the St. Andrew South Police Division, told Radio Jamaica News that the operation began about 7:30 a.m.
"So since morning we have started to target a number of public passenger vehicles...with excess tinting, excess amplified sound systems, or just buses that have real defects. Because one of the things we're trying to impact as well is road safety. And of course, the defective vehicles on our road [do] contribute to road fatalities and accidents as well. And so we have been doing much of those and seeking to encourage compliance."
Additionally, he said more than 30 pairs of licence plates were removed and in excess of 50 traffic tickets had been written in the ongoing operation.
According to Superintendent Manderson, the operation sought to address growing concern about loud and obscene music being played in PPVs.
"It's one of the things that spurred this operation and the operations that are to come.... We are asking for these operators, these owners to desist from these, to remove the illegal amplified sound systems that are within the [vehicles], and of course, for adults to be adults; for adults to take responsibility in ensuring the safety of our children and of the members of the public as they traverse and use these public passenger vehicles," he appealed.
