Claudine Lofters, Director of Finance at Unicomer Jamaica, speaking with Business Reporter Javaughn Keyes
Unicomer Jamaica says it is keen on expansion in the country.
The company, which operates Courts and Radio Shack, has invested millions in the rollout of its new commercial arm, Courts Business Solutions.
Claudine Lofters, Director of Finance at Unicomer Jamaica, said there has been interest in the new segment, which was launched in St. Ann in August.
"That is where we are offering high-end industrial grade items to business customers. And this will be like hoteliers, restaurants who are looking for those items. The added value to that which people know about Courts, our Unicomer Group, is that we actually offer after sales, so we honour your manufacturer's warranty plus we do sell additional warranty where you need it. So it's a more targeted approach and we are hitting the market," she said.
Ms. Lofters said the company is in the process of setting meetings with hotels and restaurants that would be interested in the products.
A part of the company's expansion is the offer of more widespread micro-credit services.
Earlier this year, the company officially launched BlueStart Capital, which operates a Courts Ready Cash.
That company is one of the 20 approved micro-finance firms in Jamaica.
"We actually have 42 locations and the thing about it is...all of our merchandise stores offer credit, so you are able to get credit at our merchandise stores and it goes up to 24 months."
The Unicomer director of finance said Courts Optical has also been a "game-changer" for the business as customers can now purchase eyewear on credit.
In addition, she said a digital wallet platform could be rolled out as part of the company's expansion plans.
The group says it has to consider all options as Jamaicans become more open to utilising digital platforms.
As part of Unicomer's expansion, the company will also open a new Courts location in Portmore Pines, St. Catherine.
