Simpson Miller sends "the signal"

It was not an election announcement, but Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller gave yet another signal on Sunday afternoon that the country could be going to the polls soon.

In the closing stage her feature address at the Annual Conference of the governing People's National Party (PNP), at the National Arena in Kingston, Mrs. Simpson, president of the 77 year-old Party, drew on the lyrics of the old hymn, Hold the Fort for I am Coming: "Ho, my comrades, see the signal, waving in the sky!"

That drew thunderous applause from the approving audience, numbering in the thousands, primed for the announcement, expected shortly, that the country will be going to the polls.

If, as is suggested, the Prime Minister calls a fresh election this year, it would be one year earlier than constitutionally due, the last election having been held on December 29, 2011.

The Prime Minister, in her lengthy address, highlighted various aspects of her government's achievements to date, and listed a number of investment projects that are either underway or will shortly begin.

One of the most significant projects, which she highlighted, was the North-South Link of Highway 2000, which is well advanced, and the opening of which she spoke of with great anticipation.

She also had strong words for members of the opposition Jamaica Labour Party, telling them to "shut your mouths" and watch her Administration getting on with the business of governing.
