It was a near death experience for a 12-year-old girl Wednesday afternoon during heavy rains in the Corporate Area.
The Haile Selassie High student came close to being washed away by flood waters in the Sandy Gully.
Mikayla Anderson was crossing the Sandy Gully about 2:00 p.m. after tending to a pig farm with her guardian, Donna Murray, when the water came down and trapped her.
She was forced to hang on to a small tree branch on top of broken rock in the middle of the gully, until two young boys saw her and alerted persons from the community as well as JDF soldiers who were stationed nearby.
But the soldiers were limited in their ability to assist, so it was four men from the community who braved the waters to save her.
The men reportedly anchored themselves using rope and crossed the water together in a human chain to reach Mikayla and bring her back to safety.
The girl and her guardian were later taken to the Olympic police station before being returned to the community, where they thanked the men who risked their lives to rescue her.
