The Jamaica Constabulary Force's Specialized Investigation Branch is reporting major gains in its fight against organised crime, with 19 alleged gang members in custody, millions of dollars seized, and illegal weapons and ammunition removed from the streets over the last week.
The latest operation was carried out on Tuesday at the Petrojam Montego Bay Terminal in Freeport.
About 11:40 Tuesday morning, members of the National Strategic Anti-Gang Division of the Specialized Investigation Branch executed a search warrant at the facility.
The operation resulted in the seizure of a Palmetto State 9-millimetre pistol, 101 rounds of mixed ammunition, suppressors, tactical gear, US$1,780 and other items.
The seizure follows a major crackdown on the Genasyde Gang under the Criminal Justice (Suppression of Criminal Organisation) Act.
Nineteen alleged members of the gang, including its reputed leader, 39-year-old Tefari Green, have been charged with various violent crimes allegedly committed across five parishes between 2021 and 2026.
Mr. Green has been charged with leadership of a criminal organisation.
Meanwhile, the Specialized Investigation Branch has recorded several other successes in Montego Bay, St. James, over the last week.
On August 6, about midday, police seized 228 rounds of ammunition in the Fairview area.
Forty-year-old Vachel Whitter was arrested and charged with several offences, including possession of a prohibited weapon, unauthorised possession of ammunition, stockpiling prohibited weapons, and trafficking in prohibited weapons.
Hours later, around 2:50 p.m., another 200 rounds of ammunition were seized during an operation on Fairview Road.
Thirty-two-year-old Jermaine Graham and 23-year-old Shamoy Staple were subsequently charged with multiple offences, including unauthorised possession of ammunition, possession of a prohibited weapon, stockpiling and trafficking in prohibited weapons, and dealing in prohibited weapons.
The police say the operations form part of the JCF's continued efforts to dismantle organised criminal networks and remove illegal weapons and ammunition from communities.
