El Salvador's President Nayib Bukele has warned gang leaders in Haiti of severe consequences if four Salvadoran aviation technicians being held hostage are not released unharmed.
In a message directed at the gang leaders and members, President Bukele says a military operation has been launched to rescue the four men.
He says the technicians are part of an international mission in Haiti and are responsible for carrying out medical evacuations and saving lives, not engaging in combat.
President Bukele says the men were kidnapped while returning from a market where they had gone to purchase food.
He has warned that the operation launched so far is nothing compared to what will follow if the hostages are not returned alive and unharmed.
The Salvadoran leader says his government has already dealt with gangs in El Salvador and can do the same in Haiti.
However, he says the gang leaders still have an opportunity to avoid further confrontation by releasing all four men unharmed.
