Forty-three per cent of local businesses feel crime is the most critical issue affecting Jamaica.

That's according to the latest Business Confidence Survey commissioned by the Jamaica Chamber of Commerce for the quarter ended September.

Six per cent of the 100 businesses polled also viewed unemployment as the major issue, along with poverty.

Of the 43 per cent of businesses which were most concerned about crime, pollster and head of Market Research Don Anderson said 50 per cent felt crime and violence would remain the same in the next year.

Another 38 per cent believed that crime will get worse.

Asked what are some of the things they believe should be implemented to curtail crime, Mr. Anderson said greater effort by the police was seen by business leaders as the number one solution to the crime problem. They also believed jobs for young people would help the situation.
