A reputed member of the G-City criminal gang based in St. James was fatally shot by the police in Red Square, Old Harbour, St. Catherine on Wednesday morning.
He has been identified as Paul Lewis, otherwise called Jay of Cornwall Courts in Montego Bay, St. James.
The police say he was killed during an attempt to apprehend him.
A gun with 12 rounds of ammunition was reportedly seized during the incident which occurred about 6:30.
Superintendent Stephanie Lindsay, head of the Jamaica Constabulary Force Corporate Communications Unit, said the police had been searching for Mr. Lewis.
"He was a known violence producer in St. James. He was the target of several operations and he was able to elude them and he was displaced to Old Harbour," she said.
The Police High Command had recently raised the police threat level to extreme after a G-City gang member was fatally shot during another police encounter.
