Alleged money stealing cops remanded

Two Policemen facing charges of Breaches of the Anti-Corruption Act were remanded when they appeared in the Corporate Area Criminal Court Thursday.

The accused, Corporal Ronald Burke and Constable Lennox Riley are booked to return to Court Friday.

Defence attorney Peter Champagne told the Court that acting on a tip the policemen went to a New Kingston hotel and accosted a pastor suspected to be involved in a visa racket.

Mr. Champagne said the pastor and a woman believed to be a church sister were taken to the Franklyn Town Police Station for questioning.

The two accused policemen reportedly searched the pastor and found a bundle of money on him.

The money was reportedly returned.

The pastor was later released and transported to a location near to the Bull Bay Police station.

However, he later reported to the police that he had been robbed.

The policemen were formally charged Wednesday in connection with the alleged theft.

But in a new development Thursday, the Court was told that both policemen reportedly signed a promissory note indicating they would be repaying a portion of the missing money.

Mr. Champagne was visibly surprised by this revelation.

The Attorney watching proceedings on behalf of the pastor, Samuel Smith, said his client went to the hotel to finalise business and was accosted while he was there.

Mr. Smith also told the Court that his client complained of receiving threatening phone calls.

In the end Corporal Burke and Constable Riley were ordered remanded.

The Pastor is scheduled to appear in Court Thursday.
