American Airlines has announced new service to Ian Fleming International Airport in St. Mary beginning February 24 next year.
Service to St. Mary will operate twice weekly, with an Embraer 175 aircraft with capacity for 76 passengers, connecting with American's hub at Miami International Airport.
Plans were initially in place for flights to begin November last year but were shelved as the appropriate navigation aids were not put in place.
Delano Seiveright, Senior Advisor and Strategist in the Ministry of Tourism, said the government has since been working to address the issues.
"Transport Minister Daryl Vaz and his teams at the Airports Authority of Jamaica and the Jamaica Civil Aviation Authority have worked together to ensure that the Ian Fleming airport is now fully up and ready for international jet commercial traffic and we're happy that American Airlines has now announced the commencement of services between Miami and Ian Fleming airport, which will service the Ocho Rios-Tower Isle area quite effectively, but beyond that also the parish of Portland and many other areas outside of the Ocho Rios area in St. Ann," he pointed out.
Mr. Seiveright said the move is proving the viability of Ian Fleming International Airport and an increase in services is expected.
