"If we stayed apart, we would go under, as locally owned (entities)...," said J.A. Lester Spaulding, explaining the rationale behind the merger that is taking place between the media businesses of The Gleaner and Radio Jamaica, which was announced at a press conference on Wednesday.

Mr. Spaulding, speaking with RJR's Dionne Jackson Miller, after the announcement, explained that each entity needed to invest further in order to compete in the rapidly changing media environment.

With the merger, he said "What you first of all do is look at infrastructure: How do I use the infrastructure that we both have; not do the investments on a parallel basis but on a together basis."

Staffing would not necessarily be a casualty of the merger, he said; pointing instead to "re-purposing" of staff to meet the new demands.

"What it is all about is to strengthen both locally owned media. We have foreigners coming in now into the area and approvals being given to do that, and what we want to be is independent. The only way you can be independent is to be able to pay your way," he stressed.
