Antigua's Senate approves permanent judge-alone trials

Antigua has passed legislation which will allow judge-only trials to become a regular part of its legal system.

Senators recently presented an amendment to the Criminal Proceedings Act of 2021, aiming to solidify the status of judge-alone trials.

Despite initially including a sunset clause, it had been extended twice.

Last month the head of the court system encouraged the removal of this clause, advocating for the permanent establishment of judge-alone trials.

The amendment, which was recently approved by the Lower House, received praise from both opposition and government senators for its assistance during the pandemic.
