The Appeal Court has reserved judgement in the appeal of Harold Berbick, who is now serving life for the killing of his uncle, Trevor Berbick, the former World Heavy Weight Boxing Champion, Trevor Berbick.
Harold Berbick was sentenced to life imprisonment in January 2008, for the murder of his uncle, who was chopped to death in Portland in 2006. He was ordered to serve 20 years behind bars before becoming eligible for parole while his co-accused, Kenton Gordon, was sentenced to 14 years for after being found guilty of the lesser charge of manslaughter.
However, Keith Bishop and Dr. Randolph Williams, attorneys for both men appealed their sentences, on the grounds that the police failed to follow proper procedure, in collecting statements from them. They argued that their clients were not given duty counsel by the police and that statements were taken from them without an attorney.
The Appeal Court said, it will hand down its decision on October 4.
Former world boxing champion Trevor Berbick, was found dead on October 28, 2006 in Norwich in the eastern parish of Portland. He was chopped several times in the head by his attackers.
Berbick fought from 1976 to 2000, finishing with a 50-11-1 record, including 33 knockouts. He lost his heavyweight title to Mike Tyson and was the last boxer to fight Muhammad Ali.
After beating Ali in 1981 in a unanimous decision in the Bahamas, Berbick went on to win the WBC heavyweight title four years later in a decision over Pinklon Thomas. Berbick's reign was short, however, as a 20-year-old Tyson knocked Berbick out in the second round on Nov. 22, 1986, to become the youngest heavyweight champion.
