At least 11 people killed as Hurricane Laura strikes Louisiana

At least 11 people have been killed as Hurricane Laura struck the US state of Louisiana.

The death toll rose after authorities reported that a Texas man was killed when the Category 4 hurricane sent a tree crashing into his home near the Louisiana border.

Four other people, all in the same residence, died from carbon monoxide poisoning from a generator.

Six of the 11 deaths were reported on Thursday.

Laura is one of the strongest hurricanes to ever hit the US Gulf Coast, striking at category four with winds up to 150 miles per hour.

Laura is now a Category One storm, but is expected to stay a hurricane until it reaches the Arkansas border.
