Attorney for Gambian group challenging decision of Jamaican Immigration authorities to detain them

The attorney for nine Gambian nationals, who were detained for two days at Kingston's Norman Manley International Airport, is raising questions about that decision by Immigration authorities.

Oswest Senior-Smith told Radio Jamaica News that the group was detained after failing to submit documents regarding their return to their home country.

The Gambians arrived on Thursday on a private jet, explaining that they would be flying on to other Caribbean islands.

Mr Senior-Smith said the group left the island on the private jet Saturday morning, but he is contending that the Gambians could have departed on Friday after their sponsor booked return tickets on a commercial flight.

The attorney said he was also denied access to his clients and that a request for more comfortable accommodations for them was also denied.

Mr Senior-Smith is also seeking to refute a claim by the Jamaican Immigration authorities that his clients were denied entry to Brazil before their arrival in Jamaica.

He said the Gambians merely the stopped in Brazil to refuel the aircraft.
