Attorney Peter Asher acquitted of forgery in gas station sale

By Racquel Porter

Attorney-at-law Peter Asher who was on trial for nine counts of forgery in relation to the sale of several service stations by National Fuels and Lubricants, has been acquitted.

The Crown's evidence was that 79-year-old Mr. Roy Decambre entered into an Agreement for Sale of eight gas stations with Total Jamaica in January 2004.

The complainant, Mr. Decambre, was the Chief Executive Officer of National Fuels and Lubricants.

According to a statement from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, at the close of the prosecution's case today, presiding judge Justice Leighton Pusey found that there was not enough evidence for the defendant to be called upon to answer.

The statement said Justice Pusey did not believe that there was substantial evidence to ground the elements of the offence, given the high standard of proof that the Crown had to meet, and the defendant was acquitted.
