Former Mayor of May Pen and People's National Party Councillor Scean Barnswell, who is accused of assaulting a woman last year, is to return to court on September 18.
Councillor Barnswell and the complainant were referred to mediation when the matter was mentioned in the Clarendon Parish Court out-station in Lionel Town on Friday.
He is accused of hitting the complainant with a bottle of water.
His attorney, Michael Thomas-Shorter, says he is hoping that both parties can reach an agreement.
"This incident came up at the height of the political silly season. So, I think tempers have cooled off and mediation might just be successful. If not, the matter still remains on the trial list," he advised.
