Bermuda: Parliament approves legislation outlining strict punishment for cybercrimes

Parliament in Bermuda has approved legislation providing for stringent punishment, including life imprisonment, for anyone convicted of offences that cause a significant risk of serious damage to human welfare or national security.

National Security Minister, Michael Weeks, said the Computer Misuse Act 2024, which the government said is intended to help battle cybercrime in the British Overseas Territory, will also provide for a one million dollar fine.

He said the amendments would give police and the DPP the powers needed to investigate and prosecute computer-related offences, saying this is to bring the legislation into more current status.
