The bodies of two boys who went missing at Lyssons Beach in St. Thomas on Monday have been found.

They have been identified as 14-year-old Keiko Mendez and 11-year-old Dwayne Brown. Mendez, who was a student of Happy Grove High School in Portland, was the first to be recovered, while Brown, who attended Lyssons Primary, was found about an hour later.

The boys drowned after they went into the sea on a log which drifted away from the shore.

According to an eyewitness, one of the boys fell from the log and the other went in to help him. Both got into difficulties and drowned.

Their bodies were found by fishermen Tuesday morning. A team of divers from the Marine Police also assisted with the search. However, some residents believe the police offered little help.

Supervision

Representatives of the Child Development Agency (CDA) were present at the scene offering support to the parents and friends of the boys.

"As the summer comes to a close, we must remind our parents that we have to supervise our children at all times; even if we think that they love the water and they can swim, children must always be left with a responsible adult.

"Let us take a lesson from this...that we get back to where the village raises the children; we all have a part to play, so let us look out for our children some more," insisted Carol Cooper Rodrigues, St. Thomas CDA Representative.

In the meantime, Superintendent Carl Ferguson, head of the Marine Police, who visited the scene, also urged parents to ensure that their children are properly supervised.

He said the sea was rough on Monday and no child should have been allowed to go to the beach unsupervised.

Superintendent Ferguson said an investigation into the incident would continue.
