The Government is advancing plans to significantly strengthen the country's hospital infrastructure, following Cabinet approval for the climate-resilient reconstruction and modernisation of four major public hospitals.
Health Minister Dr. Christopher Tufton said the initiative represents a major investment in the modernisation, resilience and capacity of Jamaica's public health system.
Minister Tufton said the initiative will be undertaken through a collaboration between the Ministry and the National Reconstruction and Resilience Authority (NaRRA), with the proposed redevelopment of hospitals across three Regional Health Authorities.
He said the four hospital projects will increase bed capacity and support the restructuring and modernisation of Jamaica's hospital network.
It will include a 250-bed Black River Hospital as a Type B facility, which Dr. Tufton noted will be an upgrade both in bed count and services.
"In Falmouth, [there will be] a 250-bed Falmouth General Hospital as a Type C facility, again another upgrade. Next, a 150-bed Noel Holmes Hospital in Hanover, as a Type C facility in accordance with the new similar secondary care model and the PAHO Smart Health Facility standard," he shared.
Additionally, a new 720-bed Kingston Public Hospital campus will be built, as a Type A facility, on lands in Kingston that were acquired earlier this year by the Ministry of Health and Wellness.
"Further, the KPH project is to see the Orange Street development of new surgical medical towers," added Dr. Tufton, who was speaking at Wednesday's post-Cabinet press briefing.
