The Consumer Affairs Commission, CAC, says by the end of the year Jamaicans will be able to seek redress in cases of dispute, at a tribunal to be established.
The move will allow consumers to take legal action against providers of goods and services, in cases where they have a complaint.
CAC Chairperson, Lorna Green, says a first instance tribunal is expected to be set up once Parliament approves changes to the Consumer Protection Act.
Ms. Green was speaking at the RJR Group News Forum Friday afternoon.
She says the tribunal will have the power to levy fines:
“It's quasi-judicial powers that allows you to take decisions as if you were in a small claims court or court and persons are expected to swear, give testimony, persons who sit on the tribunal they take decisions the decisions are binding enforceable in a court of law.”
Ms. Green says the move will also increase the powers of the CAC and improve its ability to represent consumers. This she says will give the CAC more teeth and will allow the, to get more redress for consumers.
