JCSA President Techa Clarke-Griffiths
By Nakinskie Robinson
President of the Jamaica Civil Service Association Techa Clarke-Griffiths wants the government to provide more support for public libraries.
Lamenting the state of most of the libraries, Mrs Clarke-Griffiths contends that public libraries are critical to the education system.
"When the country was under COVID, the entity that led the online school system and so on, those persons who unfortunately didn't have the technology and so on, was a library. Yet, the resources that is required to run the libraries is quite inadequate," she complained.
Mrs. Clarke-Griffiths said it appears that the government has placed no priority on upgrading the libraries.
"The positions are low, and I don't think they spend any time to look carefully at the structure of the library, even during the compensation restructuring. And so what is happening in the library service is that it is struggling to operate in a way that is modernised."
The JCSA president wants the Ministry of Education to strengthen its collaboration with libraries to keep pace with technological improvements.
This, she said, would result in online libraries that increase accessibility for students and others who require the service.
Mrs. Clarke-Griffiths was delivering an address at the Manchester Parish Library for the start of the library's fourth annual summer camp.
