There is another call for a major overhaul of the security arrangement at public hospitals in Jamaica, following Tuesday's fatal shooting of a male patient at the May Pen Hospital.
The Jamaica Workers' Union (JWU) which represents several categories of personnel at hospitals said on Friday that it was time for the authorities to address security gaps at these facilities.
Clifton Brown, president of the union, said the incident at the May Pen Hospital should serve as a wake-up call.
A brazen gun attack early Tuesday morning on a ward at the hospital in the central parish of Clarendon left one man dead and resulted in the Jamaica Constabulary Force establishing a police post on the compound.
Adif Washington, 36, from the parish, was shot dead during the invasion of a hospital ward. Washington was admitted to hospital where he was being treated for serious injuries sustained after being shot on Sunday.
Glenmore Hinds, Deputy Commissioner of Police, in charge of Crime, who met with the management of the May Pen Hospital, announced that with immediate effect, a police post, to operate on a 24-hour basis, will be established at the hospital.
