The police in Westmoreland said cane fields are acting as
an impediment in their fight against crime in that parish.
The cops note that while the canes are at full height prior to reaping, criminals use them as a haven.
Last year when crimes increased by 30% in the parish, several shoot-outs between the police and armed thugs, resulted in the criminals escaping in cane fields.
Deputy Superintendent in charge of the Negril area Tyrill Brissett said the problem areas are Grange Hill, Frome and Little London.
"They proceed along these intervals you can reach anywhere in the parish without touching any main roads. We notice an influx of criminals when the cane is overgrown," said Deputy Superintendent Brissett.
He adds that another challenging area is the parish capital, due to its poor road networks and inner-cities.
DSP Brissett notes however that the police have made major inroads in terms of capturing wanted persons, which can be attributed to improved community policing efforts.
