Carnival Cruise Line has carried out its threat to bypass Jamaica if the Government did not soften its stance on interim guidelines for ships to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.
In a statement Wednesday, the company said two of its ships – the Horizon and the Freedom – which were scheduled to make stops in Jamaica and the Cayman Islands this weekend, have changed plans.
The Miami based company said while it is following U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and World Health Organization screening protocols and guidelines, it wants to avoid any possibility of a visit to a destination where there is uncertainty or risk of being turned away.
Another ship from Carnival, the Costa Luminosa, which docked in Jamaica last Friday was not allowed to have Italian citizens disembark due to the travel ban on persons from Italy.
A MSC Cruises ship was turned away from Jamaica and Cayman Islands last week amid reports of an ill crew member.
Minister of Health Dr. Christopher Tufton has said the interim guidelines for cruise ships arriving in Jamaica will remain despite criticism from international and local stakeholders.
