Cayman Islands spared major impact as Hurricane Beryl passes

Hurricane Beryl skirted the Cayman Islands yesterday, bringing heavy rain and a storm surge that caused pockets of serious damage but left the bulk of the territory largely unscathed.

Residents were given the 'all-clear' by 1pm yesterday.

About 3,000 households, mostly in the eastern districts, lost electricity during the hurricane. The majority had their power restored by late afternoon.

Water supplies have also been restored.

Hurricane Beryl is now a Category 2 storm and is unloading damaging winds, torrential rainfall, and a dangerous storm surge over a significant portion of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula.
