Child killer Kayodi Satchell's lawyer urges judge to be lenient in sentencing

Attorney Pierre Rodgers, who is representing child killer Kayodi Satchell, is seeking to have his client serve no more than three decades behind bars before she's eligible for parole.

It was revealed in the Home Circuit Court on Monday that Satchell, who pleaded guilty to killing eight year-old Danielle Rowe, cut the child's throat out of frustration at contracting HIV from the girl's father.

Noting that the starting point for sentences for the crime ranges between 25 and 45 years,  Mr Rodgers argued that the higher range is reserved for convicts who commit multiple murders.

Acknowledging the circumstances, Mr Rodgers proposed a starting point of 30 to 35 years before eligibility for parole.

The 32 year-old dental assistant wiped her face as her attorney presented the aggravating factors to the court.

Asking Justice Carolyn Tie Powell to consider the aggravating and mitigating factors, Mr Rodgers said his client's frustration cannot account for the death of the child.

The court heard yesterday that Satchell, who was in a relationship with Rowe's father, had a miscarriage, lost her child, job, and place of residence as a result of contracting HIV.

The attorney acknowledged that Satchell did something wrong and deserves to be punished, but at the same time said the convict remains a human being who is worthy of care.

Noting that Satchell is capable of rehabilitation, he said she is not someone who was engaged in a criminal lifestyle.

Mr Rodgers said the convicted woman acknowledges the pain she has caused Danielle's family.

Prior to Monday's adjournment, Satchell whispered "I am sorry" to Danilelle's mother and sister who were also in court.
