ZOSOs extended for another 180 days

National Security Minister Dr. Horace Chang

The House of Representatives on Tuesday afternoon approved an extension of the Zones of Special Operations (ZOSO) in several communities across the island.

National Security Minister Dr. Horace Chang piloted a motion for the extensions in Denham Town, Mount Salem, August Town, Greenwich Town, Parade Gardens, Norwood and Savannah-la-mar.

The 180-day extension will expire in June 2025.

In reacting to a question from Opposition Leader Mark Golding as to when the government will establish ZOSOs in other troubled communities, Dr. Chang said the government is considering ending the Zone of Special Operations in the Mount Salem community and to "pivot into another area".

Where Denham Town is concerned, Dr. Chang said the programme's "clear, hold and build" strategy has not worked as well as expected.

While the community has been cleared "to some extent" resulting in a significant decline in the level violence, and 'holding' has been working despite some challenges, the minister said the build phase has not been going smoothly.

He said the government will be reviewing how to proceed with these activities as they seek to close out in that community and extend to other areas.
