The Trinidadian authorities have detained 16 Venezuelan nationals, including two babies.
The police say they received intelligence that a vessel with Venezuelans aboard was approaching the shore off a south Trinidad beach.
Surveillance officers say they saw several people, mostly women and children, and three men as they ran toward the shoreline and into some bushes after they had been brought in by a small boat.
Police said the 16 people have been placed in holding cells, while special arrangements are being made with immigration officials.
