Cocoa Piece killer to appeal 'extreme' sentence

By Clinton McGregor

The Court of Appeal is expected to hear submissions on Friday in the appeal of Rushane Barnett, who was convicted for killing a family of five in Cocoa Piece, Chapelton, Clarendon, two years ago.

Barnett, who pleaded guilty to killing his cousin and her four children in June 2022, is serving five life sentences.

He will be eligible for parole after 61 years and eight months in prison.

But Barnett has filed an appeal challenging the severity of his sentence.

He contends that the sentence is extreme and that he should have benefitted from discounts during the sentencing since he had pleaded guilty early in the process.

The country was left in a state of shock when news broke that 31-year-old Kemisha Wright and her children: 15-year-old Kimanda Smith, 12-year-old Sharalee Smith, 5-year-old Rafaella Smith and 23-month-old Kishawn Henry were found murdered in their home.

The bodies had multiple stab wounds.

Barnett was later captured in Trelawny.
