Controversial method of punishment suggested for praedial larceny

The National Co-ordinator for the Praedial Larceny Prevention Programme, retired Assistant Commissioner of Police, Reginald Grant, is suggesting a controversial method of punishing persons who steal farm produce.

Mr. Grant says based on the provisions of the law, male offenders who steal produce from farmers can be whipped.

Speaking with RJR News Tuesday, Mr. Grant pointed to a section of the Praedial Larceny Act which empowers each Resident Magistrate  to order that such persons be whipped.
He says even if such punishment is deemed harsh, it is the only way to deter praedial thieves.
