Convicted killer gets chance to prove his innocence

A convicted killer who is now serving a life sentence for the 1992 massacre of a family in Montego Bay, has been given a lifeline by two of his fellow inmates who claim he is an innocent man.The Appeal Court has agreed to hear new evidence which could lead to the release of 34-year-old Patrick Taylor, who has been in prison for the past 15 years.

Lawyers for Taylor filed an application last week claiming they have fresh evidence to show that Taylor has been imprisoned for a crime he did not commit.

Taylor was convicted in 1994 for the murders of a man and his entire family in Lottery, St. James.

Orrett Peddlar, his common-law wife Maria Wright and their two children, 15-year-old Matthew and six-year-old Useph Peddlar were ambushed near their home after returning from a farm and chopped to death.

Investigations led to the arrests of Patrick Taylor, his brother Desmond and another man, Steve Shaw.

The three men took their case all the way to the UK based Privy Council.

However, the Council affirmed their conviction and sentences.

Now Patrick Taylor has been thrown a lifeline by his brother and Shaw who have now told the authorities that they committed the killings and Patrick had nothing to do with the crime.

The Peddlars were killed arising from a long standing dispute between them and the Taylor family.

Defence attorney Jacks Hinds has asked the Appeal Court to consider the fresh evidence as an innocent man may be languishing in prison.

The High Court has agreed to hear the evidence.
