A correctional officer accused of assaulting a child appeared before the Kingston and St. Andrew Parish Court on Tuesday to answer to the charge.
The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) says Andrew Ricketts, who is employed to the Department of Correctional Services, allegedly gave instructions for another ward to slap the child in his face, which caused the complainant's eardrum to rupture.
The incident occurred on February 12, 2024 at the Metcalfe Street Juvenile Centre.
Following an investigation by INDECOM, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions ruled Mr. Ricketts should be charged with causing a child to be assaulted, contrary to Section 9(1)(b) of the Child Care and Protection Act.
Correctional officer Ricketts was ordered to again appear in court on October 13, 2025.
