COVID cases climbing at correctional facilities

The Department of Correctional Services is reporting an increase in the number of COVID-19 cases among the inmate population and staff members at correctional institutions in recent weeks.

In a news release Friday afternoon, the department said, currently, 58 inmates and wards have tested positive for the virus.

Seven have been hospitalised.

Thirty-eight staff members have tested positive and are now in isolation.

The Department of Correctional Services will implement additional COVID-19 measures to reduce and prevent the spread of the virus.

Starting Saturday, there will be no movement at the Tower Street Adult Correctional Centre for seven days and cloth masks will be prohibited.

Surgical masks will be distributed to inmates and officers.

The rotation of officers will also be suspended.

They will retain their assigned posts for the seven days to prevent the spread of the virus.
