Damage to JPS underground cables disrupts power to Port Royal residents

By Prince Moore

The Jamaica Public Service Company says power supply to approximately 500 customers in Port Royal was affected Monday by damage to its underground cables in the vicinity of the lighthouse on Port Royal Road.

Initial reports are that the incident occurred Monday morning, when a company contracted by the Airports Authority of Jamaica was carrying out construction on a marine defence barrier.

It is reported that a manhole housing underground distribution cables serving Port Royal was damaged when a huge boulder fell from a tractor operated by the contractor causing damage to the JPS underground power lines.

JPS temporarily suspended electricity to the community.

The company conducted repair work in the area Monday afternoon.
