Opposition Spokesperson on Health and Wellness Dr. Alfred Dawes has called for the Ministry of Health to increase its vector control activities in light of the recent passage of Hurricane Beryl.
According to Dr. Dawes, several communities have historically experienced an increase in their mosquito populations after heavy rains.
The Portmore municipality is one such region, leaving residents who were spared the brunt of the hurricane to now face the risk of a dengue outbreak.
Dr. Dawes claims that massive swarms of the Aedes aegypti mosquito have been seen in several communities islandwide, and residents are calling for the authorities to step up vector control measures.
The Aedes aegypti mosquito is the vector for the Dengue, Chikungunya, and Zika viruses.
Dr. Dawes called for the Ministry to accept the offer from the Portmore Municipal Corporation to provide assistance with trained fogging teams to supplement the teams from the Health Ministry.
He said the Ministry must concede that it is not staffed with enough workers to effectively carry out the fogging exercise across the country.
