Deaths of two inmates confirmed by prison authorities

The Department of Correctional Services has confirmed the deaths of two inmates who had been experiencing flu-like symptoms.

The DCS revealed on Sunday that the deaths occurred on Friday and Saturday.

This revelation also follows confirmation of what the DCS says are Influenza A Cases at two Correctional Facilities.

According to a release from the DCS, preliminary laboratory results have identified the Influenza A virus in samples from six inmates at St. Catherine Adult Correctional Centre and one inmate at Tower Street Adult Correctional Centre.

Prison officials say the management of these cases continues to focus on isolating inmates exhibiting flu-like symptoms, restricting movement within the facilities, enforcing strict hand washing and sanitization protocols as well as mandating mask-wearing by both inmates and staff.

The DCS added that its health personnel have been providing access to flu vaccines and Vitamin C supplements and is encouraging early reporting of symptoms where observed.

Authorities have also been conducting regular testing and continuous monitoring of staff and inmates.
