There have been reactions of outrage at the defacement of the decades-old statue-monument erected to commemorate the legacy of National Rero, Samuel Sharpe.
On Monday, the five-statue monument, which includes Sam Sharpe, was found smeared with green paint.
It is located in Sam Sharpe Square in the parish capital, Montego Bay.
Kevin Barnes, a resident who provides local tours to visitors, declared the act of vandalism represents total disregard for Jamaica's history.
He claimed the defacement with paint has been happening for roughly three months without removal.
He is calling for increased security measures to be established, since the monument is also a tourist attraction.
Mayor of Montego Bay Richard Vernon acknowledged that acts of vandalism targeting the monument have been on the rise.
In light of this, security measures including the mounting of CCTV cameras have been implemented, put in place, he said.
Mexine Bisasor Bryan, Chair of the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission and board member of Jamaica National Heritage Trust, in response to news of the defacement, said the Trust and other stakeholders are working to restore the decades-old statues.
