Derailed UC Rusal train removed with minimal environmental impact - NEPA

The UC Rusal train which derailed along the Bog Walk Gorge in St. Catherine has been removed with minimal environmental impact.

The train, which was transporting alumina from Ewarton Works to Port Esquivel, derailed on Saturday, August 9, with three of its hopper cars tumbling over an embankment.

The National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) says the incident resulted in only minimal spillage of the alumina, and based on the agency's assessment, this was confined to the base of the embankment.

NEPA adds that there was no observed contamination of the Rio Cobre, nor was the spilled material hazardous. There was also no fish kill.

The agency says it monitored UC Rusal's cleanup operation and is satisfied the work was done in a way that protected the area's natural environment.
