The sentencing of Police Constable Patrick Walters, who pleaded guilty to manslaughter following the shooting death of his girlfriend during a dispute in Richmond, St. Mary in June last year, has been postponed until October 2.
The 24-year-old constable was initially charged with murder, but pleaded guilty to the lesser offence of manslaughter and using a firearm to commit a felony, in the St. Mary Circuit Court in July.
However, during Friday's hearing, one of Walters' attorneys, Carole Phillips, underscored mitigating factors such as his age and the fact that he pleaded guilty on the first relevant date. He is also represented by attorney law Donahue Martin.
The policeman was charged in connection with the shooting death of 20-year-old D'Jonnay Graham on June 25, 2025. Ms. Graham was an assistant teacher.
Investigators had reported that the couple had an argument about a telephone call Ms. Graham received while they were in Kingston. The argument escalated when they arrived home in St. Mary.
It was reported that the constable pulled his service pistol and shot Ms. Graham. The constable then shot himself in the head during an attempt to take his own life.
The injured couple was rushed to hospital where Ms. Graham was pronounced dead and the constable admitted for a gunshot wound.
Walters, who recovered from his head wound, was charged following a ruling by the Director of Public Prosecutions in July last year.
