Doctors warn Influenza A should be taken seriously

Medical expert Dr Winston Dawes is cautioning that the Influenza A cases affecting inmates at some correctional facilities could be spread to the general public if precautionary measures are not implemented.
 
The Department of Correctional Services has confirmed the death of two inmates who had been experiencing flu-like symptoms.
 
The DCS also confirmed that Influenza A Cases were identified at two correctional facilities.
 
Dr Dawes warned on Sunday that warders could contract the virus and transmit it to their family members.
 
He said surveillance and vaccination is important to cauterize the Influenza A cases among the prison population.

The Medical Association of Jamaica, commenting on the matter as well, said  more information is needed about the sub-types of the influenza A affecting inmates at some correctional facilities. 
 
MAJ President Dr Leslie Meade, asked by Radio Jamaica News to comment on the matter, said it was critical to have this understanding.
 
He said medical practitioners normally use similar treatment for Influenza type illnesses.
 
Dr Meade said members of the public should also practice infection prevention and control measures.
