Attorney-at-law Tom Tavares-Finson, representing Dr Carl Bruce
Dr Carl Bruce, consultant neurosurgeon and Medical Chief of Staff at The University Hospital of the West Indies, is to stand trial in September on assault charges.
The September 29 trial date was set on Tuesday morning when Dr Bruce appeared before the Kingston & St Andrew Parish court, after the complainant refused to go to mediation.
The charges against the noted neurosurgeon are in relation to an alleged fight with another consultant, Dr Roger Hunter, on the grounds of the hospital on January 31, 2007.
Dr Bruce is charged with malicious destruction of property and assault at common law.
He is alleged to have physically, verbally, and emotionally abused the complainant on the day of the incident in the planning room of the operating theatre at the hospital.
Dr Hunter is alleging that he was preparing for a surgery when Dr Bruce barged in and shouted at him to get out.
He further claims that Dr Bruce advanced toward him, shoving him before grabbing his shirt and necktie, damaging both.
Both items were valued at $5,000.
The complainant says he then shoved Dr Bruce, who he said threatened repeatedly to spit in his face before leaving the room.
Dr Hunter says he initially did not report the matter to the police as he thought it would have been dealt with internally.
He later reported the matter in November 2024, after his return to the island.
During Tuesday's proceedings, both parties were warned to refrain from posting about the case on social media.
In the meantime, one of the attorney's representing Dr. Bruce, Tom Tavares-Finson, KC, says his client maintains his innocence.
Attorney Kimani Brydson appeared for the hospital.
