The National Labour Day Project in Portland
involved planting vegetables and fruit trees and setting up a greenhouse at the
Buff Bay
High School as well as the planting of
70 different trees on the compound of the Tranquility Primary School.
These endeavours are in keeping with the Labour Day theme - 'Eat what we grow, grow what we eat'.
Acting Prime Minister Dr. Ken Baugh gave the main address which focused on mobilizing Jamaicans to produce enough food locally to feed the country, and in so doing, to eradicate poverty.
At Friday afternoon's official opening of the National Project, greetings were also offered by a number of government Ministers including Member of Parliament of West Portland Daryl Vaz and Education Minister Andrew Holness.
Plant what we eat
Minister Bruce Golding said the day should be used to reflect on the work of the labour movement.
He said the country has made great strides in labour relations and that we should be mindful of the constantly changing environment in which we exist.
And in her Labour Day address to the nation, Opposition Leader Portia Simpson Miller said with the day marking the 17th anniversary of the 1938 workers uprising, Jamaicans should pay tribute to workers who stood at the front-line to defend their cause during that period.
Both leaders said Jamaicans should try to understand the value of local production and to plant what we eat in response to the international food shortage.
