Effort on to stop deportations from UK to Jamaica

A group of activists in the UK has started a campaign to stop next month's deportation flight to Jamaica.

According to campaigners, passengers on the flight, which is scheduled to depart on December 2, include fathers of young children and a man who has lived in the UK since he was seven.

At least eight people have so far been booked on the flight after they were detained and transferred to detention centres last week.

Zita Holbourne, co-founder of the group, Black Activists Rising Against Cuts, who has been speaking to the families, told Britain's Morning Star newspaper that they fear their loved ones will be deported to Jamaica before they have a chance to say goodbye, because visits to detention centres are banned under COVID-19 restrictions.

A spokesman for the British Home Office said the individuals due to be deported are foreign-national offenders including convicted murderers and rapists.

Ms Holbourne said of  the people she is aware of  due to be on the deportation flight, some have convictions for drug offences.

Under the country’s immigration law, foreign nationals can face automatic deportation if  they have been convicted of  a crime carrying a sentence of  12 months or more.
