The Jamaica Egg Farmers Association has confirmed that there is a contraction in the market due to three factors affecting production of eggs.

President of the association, Mark Campbell, was reacting to a supermarket sign limiting each customer to one tray of eggs.

He said there is no shortage of the commodity but rather a 'tightness' in the market.

"In a true shortage, you would not have seen a sign limiting customers to one tray. You would probably see a sign which says ‘Eggs are not available today. They will be back on the shelves in another few days’ or so. But the eggs are there but not in the numbers that we are accustomed to," he explained.

Mr. Campbell said the replacement of layer birds, the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and the increased cost of production have caused the tightness in the egg market at this time.

But he said consumers should see an improvement soon.
