Expansion of Spanish Town Hospital Maternity Unit complete

The expansion of the Maternity Unit at the Spanish Town Hospital, in St. Catherine, is now complete.

The Maternity Unit is to accommodate an additional 12 beds, bringing the total bed capacity to more than 100.

The announcement was made on Tuesday morning by Chairman of the South-East Regional Health Authority, Lyttleton Shirley.

Mr. Shirley said the expansion will further reduce the challenges of overcrowding, which this facility experiences, during the months of September to January, when there is a peak, in the number of deliveries.

The expansion was completed with a grant valued at more than $3 million, from the National Health Fund.

According to Mr. Shirley, SERHA, which oversees that facility, has been working assiduously with the Ministry of Health, to transform the hospital into a world-class facility.

He was speaking during the ground-breaking ceremony for the Queen Sofía of Spain Women’s Centre, at the hospital.

Meanwhile, Mr. Shirley said the Queen Sofía of Spain Women’s Centre, will include a Counselling Department, Colposcopy Services and the expansion of the Post-natal Ward.

It will be built and selectively retrofitted with the relevant equipment, through an MOU between the Caricom/Spain Technical Cooperative Programme, and the Ministry of Health.
