Falmouth Police to wait longer for new station

After several years of waiting and bitter complaints about their work environment, police men and women attached to the Falmouth Police station in Trelawny are again being asked to bear the conditions for a while longer.

Parliament was told on Tuesday afternoon that the government has decided to terminate the contract for the construction of a new police station.

This in the wake of a stalemate with the building contractor Ashtrom Building systems for a resumption of the multi-million dollar project.

Prime Minister Bruce Golding told the House that no allocations have been made in this year's budget for the project and he was not in a position to give a time line for construction to resume.

Responding to questions from Member of Parliament for North Trelawny Dr. Patrick Harris, Mr. Golding also highlighted the financial problems that have plagued the project.

He added that steps will be taken to ensure greater supervision of  construction when the new designs are submitted.

"If the decision was taken to proceed on a turnkey basis greater supervision would have been provided in the design of the contract. It should not have been left to the contractors, I don't know what was the quality of the design brief that was provided but it certainly should not have been left to the contractors to design what the consider to be appropriate,"

"The design should have been similar to the Hundred Man Station in Portmore but there should have been greater supervision of the design work so these problems would not have been encountered," Mr. Golding said.
