Farmer charged in St. Elizabeth cocaine bust offered $1 million bail

George McKenzie, the 48-year-old farmer who was placed on the police's wanted list in June last year after escaping the police during a drug operation in St. Elizabeth, was offered bail on Wednesday in the Manchester Parish Court.

McKenzie was offered bail in the amount of $1 million following a bail application by his attorneys, King's Counsel Peter Champagnie and Patrice Riley.

Prosecutors had reported that on June 19, 2024, McKenzie was the driver of a Honda motor vehicle that was intercepted by the police during an operation in Middle Quarters, St. Elizabeth.

During a search of the vehicle, cocaine with a street value of $1 million was reportedly found in a secret compartment.

The police reported that McKenzie fled the scene and went into hiding. He was placed on the police wanted list for arrest.

However, last month, McKenzie surrendered to the police.

In making the application for bail, his lawyers challenged the narrative that was given by the police, adding that the vehicle in question had been loaned to someone else earlier.

McKenzie was then offered bail and ordered to return to court on September 17.

A curfew order was also imposed by the judge.
