Chief Eexecutive Officer of Mscale, Ugo Ikemba, says construction of the company's 80 megawatt solar plant in Trelawny will begin in January, now that all equipment, engineers and supporting resources are in place.
Speaking Friday on Power 106 FM's Real Business, Mr. Ikemba emphasised that solar energy remains essential to cutting Jamaica's electricity costs, shrinking the country's carbon footprint and reducing its reliance on imported diesel and natural gas.
Mr. Ikemba added that the project is expected to create around 600 jobs.
He said it is expected to cost US$56 million and deliver power to approximately five US cents per kilowatt-hour, supplying roughly 12 per cent of Jamaica's electricity demand.
Mr. Ikemba noted that the partnership with SunTerra comes at a critical time as a new solar plant will strengthen the resilience of the national grid which suffered significant damage during Hurricane Melissa.
