PIAJ calls for emergency pension access for hurricane-hit Jamaicans

President of the Pensions Industry Association of Jamaica (PIAJ), Sanya Goffe, is calling for the government to urgently move forward with the long-delayed Pensions Bill so that Jamaicans hit hard by Hurricane Melissa can access part of their retirement savings.

She says the legislation would activate hardship provisions that allow contributors facing severe financial strain to withdraw a portion of their pension funds to repair homes, restore businesses and rebuild their livelihoods.

The PIAJ is also urging the government to approve a contribution holiday clause, which would permit both employers and employees to temporarily pause their pension payments following a major disaster.

Mrs. Goffe says advancing the bill is now critical as thousands of Jamaicans continue to struggle in the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa.
